FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BERNIE HERPIN TO MAKE FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT
FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER IN DISTRICT 2

Colorado Springs--Bernie Herpin will formally announce his candidacy on Saturday, February 21, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Radisson Inn – Colorado Springs Airport, 1645 N Newport Rd (East of Powers and Fountain). A reception will follow at Solo’s Restaurant, next door to the Radisson.

Herpin stated his reasons for running for the County Commission include, "With the challenges facing our County in the next several years, it is important that we have a county commissioner representing District 2 who has demonstrated the ability to form coalitions to work with people in developing solutions." Herpin’s top priorities are transportation, public safety, and restoring citizens’ confidence in county government. "The recent recall efforts over the expansion of the jail and courthouse show the need for more citizen involvement in the decisions of county government," Herpin stated. If elected, Herpin would like the commissioners to hold a "media summit" where print and broadcast media leaders and commissioners could develop better working relationships to keep the public accurately informed on county business.

Herpin has been a resident of Colorado Springs since 1980 when he was assigned to Headquarters, North American Aerospace Defense Command. He and his wife, Linda, have raised three daughters in Colorado Springs.

He has been active in our community having served as past Vice President of the Pikes Peak Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He currently serves on the Colorado Springs Airport Advisory Commission, the Fourth Judicial District Performance Review Commission, as President of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, as Treasurer of the Southern Colorado Base of the US Submarine Veterans, and is an 18-year Colorado Springs Police Department volunteer where he has been a Caseworker on the Department’s Senior Victim Assistance Team for the past 15 years.

A long time advocate for the right to keep and bear arms, Herpin currently serves as President of the Pikes Peak Firearms Coalition. In 2000, Herpin took the Colorado Ballot Title Setting Board to the Colorado Supreme Court over the wording of Amendment 22, the gun show background check amendment. He has also served as the Chairman of the non-profit, non-political Colorado Springs Friends of NRA Committee, which holds annual local fundraisers for the NRA Foundation to raise money to support firearms safety education, range development, and youth shooting sports, for the past 3 years.

Herpin is an active member of the Republican Party and is currently Vice Chair of Commissioner District 2 and a Precinct Committee Person. He has served on many campaigns including for Governor Bill Owens, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa, State Representative Bill Sinclair, and El Paso County Commissioner Jim Bensberg. Governor Owens has labeled Bernie a "Great friend and citizen of Colorado." This is Herpin’s second try for public office, having run unsuccessfully for the Colorado Springs City Council in 1997.

Herpin currently works for Lockheed Martin Information Technology as a Senior Configuration Management Analyst supporting the Global Positioning System (GPS) Master Control Station at Schriever AFB. A retired military officer, Herpin served in the United States Navy both as an enlisted man and a Naval officer in the Submarine Service, and in the United States Air Force where he retired as a captain in 1985. After retirement, he worked for National Systems and Research for more than 18 years before accepting his current position with Lockheed Martin.
